Why hire an arena?
You don't always need a full livery yard's facilities. Riders hire arenas to work on schooling in a proper surface, jump a course without setting one up at home, prepare for a competition, or run a private lesson with a visiting instructor.
Typical UK arena hire prices in 2026
- Outdoor arena, off-peak: £10–£20 per hour
- Outdoor arena, peak / weekends: £15–£30 per hour
- Indoor school, off-peak: £20–£35 per hour
- Indoor school, peak / weekends: £30–£50 per hour
- Full-day hire (clinics, private events): £150–£400
- Show jumping course use, per session: typically £5–£10 extra per horse
Cross-country schooling grounds are priced separately, usually £25–£45 per horse per session.
Indoor vs outdoor
Indoor schools are worth the extra money in winter or for horses that spook at wind and weather. Look for good lighting, mirrors, and a well-maintained surface.
Outdoor arenas are cheaper and often larger, but usable hours drop sharply from November to February. A good outdoor arena will have drainage, a maintained surface, and a proper fenced perimeter.
What to check before you book
- Size — a 20×40m arena is fine for flatwork; jumping and dressage tests need 20×60m or larger
- Surface — ask what it is, how often it's harrowed
- Jumping equipment — included or bring your own?
- Insurance — most owners require personal public liability cover
- Sharing — exclusive or shared session?
- Cancellation policy — 24 or 48 hours is standard
Etiquette
Arrive on time, tack up in the designated area, don't lunge in a shared session without asking, and leave the arena as you found it. Being a good guest gets you rebooked.
