Indoor vs Outdoor Arena: Which Should You Book?
A quick comparison of indoor and outdoor arena hire for UK riders — cost, seasonality, lighting, surfaces and what to book when.
The trade-off
Indoor arenas cost more and are usually smaller. Outdoor arenas are cheaper and often bigger, but weather-dependent for half the UK year.
When to pick indoor
- November–February in most of the UK
- Any time you need reliable lighting for evening rides
- Nervous or spooky horses that need a contained environment
- Video work where you don't want wind noise on the mic
When to pick outdoor
- Spring, summer and dry autumn days
- Dressage practice at 20×60m — very few indoor schools reach the full test size
- Big jumping courses that need room to build a proper related distance
Surfaces to look for
- Silica sand with rubber or fibre: forgiving, all-weather
- Waxed surface: excellent grip, dust-free, more expensive to hire
- Plain sand: cheaper, dustier, harder in dry weather
Always ask when the surface was last harrowed. A surface that's been sitting for a fortnight rides very differently to one done that morning.
Booking tips
- Book two hours if you plan to jump — you need warm-up plus a course
- Ask if jumps and poles are included
- Confirm exclusive use in writing if you don't want to share
