What XC schooling actually gets you
Cross-country schooling is different from arena jumping — different terrain, different fence types, water, ditches, banks. Even a horse that jumps happily at home needs miles over solid fences to become a confident event horse.
Typical UK XC schooling prices in 2026
- Per horse, per session (2 hours): £25–£45
- Instructor-led group session: £45–£85 per horse
- Private lesson on the XC course: £70–£120 per hour plus venue fee
Most UK venues run booked sessions on set weekends between April and October.
Kit list
- XC vest (BETA level 3 minimum for anything beyond walk-trot)
- Air jacket if you own one
- Skull cap to current PAS 015 / VG1 standard
- XC boots or brushing boots on all four legs
- Grease on the front of the legs for slippery water
- Studs matched to the going
Introducing a green horse
Walk the horse over every fence in hand or lightly ridden first. Start with a solid log at trot. Add water at walk before you canter through it. Every horse remembers a bad first XC experience for years, so protect it.
Insurance and rider PL
Most UK XC venues require a signed disclaimer and expect you to have personal public liability cover. Your BHS Gold membership includes this — it's the cheapest sensible insurance for a cross-country rider.
